To prepare & submit Non staining Iodine ointment with Methyl Salicylate
Requirements:
Apparatus: weighing balance, beaker, glass mortar & pestle, stoppered iodine flask, water bath, tripod stand, china dish, spatula, glass rod etc.
Chemicals: Iodine, soft paraffin, methyl salicylate, arachis oil, purified water, etc
Principle: Fats and oils obtained from animal or plant sources often contain unsaturated fatty acids or their esters. The iodine combines with double bonds and thus free iodine is not available.
e.g.  CH3(CH2)7CH=CH(CH2)7COOH  +  I2  =
Oleic acid     
CH3(CH2)7CH.I – CH.I (CH2)7 COOH
Di-iodostearic acid
Since free iodine is not available, these ointments are dark, greenish black in colour.
It leaves no stain when rubbed on the skin.

Storage:- store in amber coloured container in cool & dry place
Direction:- apply on affected area as directed by physician

Observation:
Appearance: smooth, blackish nonstaining soft paste.

Result:- 20gm of Non staining Iodine ointment with Methyl Salicylate was prepared & submitted.
