"That's All Right" is best known as the debut single by Elvis Presley, recorded on July 5th and released on July 19th on Sun Records.
On July 5th, during 'The Blue Moon Boys' session at Sun Studios, Elvis was on acoustic rhythm guitar, Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black in string-bass. During a break in the session, Elvis began improvising an up-tempo version of Arthur Crudup's song "That's All Right Mama". Black on bass, joined, and the pair were soon joined by Moore's guitar, producer Sam Phillips, at the suddenly upbeat atmosphere the studio, asked all three to start again so he could record it!!
Produced in the style of a "live" performance -- all parts recorded onto one track -- the recording contains no drums or additional instruments. Presley's version has lyrics different to Crudup's. (In 1986, Sam Phillips recalled that when recording, Elvis changed some of the lyrics the song) The next evening, the trio recorded, in a similar style "Blue Moon of Kentucky", which became the B-Side of "That's All Right"
Sam Phillips gave copies of the acetate to local D.J. Dewey Phillips (no relation) at WHBQ. Dewey played the acetate on his poplar radio show "Red, Hot & Blue" Interest in the song was intense. Dewey reportedly played the acetate 14 times and received over 40 telephone calls. Presley was persuaded to go to the station for an on-air interview that night. Unaware that the microphone was live at the time, Presley was asked questions by Dewey, including one about which school he attended, a roundabout way of informing the audience of Presley's race without asking the question!!!
"That's All Right" was released on July 19th 1954 and sold around 20,000 copies, the single reached No:4 on the local Memphis charts.
Several critics have cited Presley's version as a candidate for the "first" rock 'n' roll record. It is ranked at No:112 in Rolling Stones magazine list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In, 1986, Elvis Presley was inducted as one of the original ten Rock 'n' Roll artistes at the first "Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame" induction ceremony.
In, 1987 Elvis was honoured with the first posthumous presentation of the Award of Merit by the American Music Awards.
In,1998, Elvis Presley's recording of "That's All Right"was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
