O foco na rumba do Central Park ilustra as complexidades e o funcionamento ancestral da diáspora africana presente na Nova York contemporânea. Pedrito Martinez é um percussionista, cantor, dançarino e compositor cubano. Nasceu e cresceu em Havana, Cuba. É um conguero cubano que toca rumbas cubanas clássicas, música folclórica afro-cubana e música religiosa. É padre de santería. Veio de Havana para os Estados Unidos em 1998. Toca batá, conga, cajón, timbales e bongôs, entre outros instrumentos de percussão. Pedrito aprendeu seu ofício nas ruas de Havana, Cuba. Apresentou-se com Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill, Brian Lynch e Bruce Springsteen.[1] Estabeleceu-se na região de Nova York e Nova Jersey em 1998.[2][3][4][5][6]

É membro fundador da banda Yerba Buena. Gravaram dois álbuns. Em 2003, President Alien e, em 2005, seu álbum Island Life alcançaram a 62ª posição na parada de álbuns latinos da Billboard.

Ele é membro do programa Nuevo Jazz Latino, que faz parte do Jazz at Lincoln Center.[7][8]

Martinez tornou-se líder do Pedrito Martinez Group em 2005. Seu primeiro álbum, The Pedrito Martinez Group, foi lançado em 2013, com os artistas convidados Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield e Steve Gadd.

Pedrito Martinez is a Cuban percussionist, singer, dancer and songwriter. He was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. He is a Cuban conguero performing classic Cuban rumbas, Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music. He is a santería priest. He came to the United States of America from Havana in 1998. He plays the batá drum, conga, cajón, timbales, and bongo drums, among other percussion instruments. Pedrito learned his craft from the streets of Havana, Cuba. He has performed with Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill, Brian Lynch, and Bruce Springsteen.[1] He settled in the New York City - New Jersey area in 1998.[2][3][4][5][6]

He is a founding member of the band Yerba Buena. They recorded two albums. In 2003, President Alien, and in 2005 their album Island Life was No. 62 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart.

He is a member of the Nuevo Jazz Latino program which is a part of Jazz at Lincoln Center.[7][8]

Martinez became leader of the Pedrito Martinez Group in 2005. Their first album The Pedrito Martinez Group was released in 2013, with guest artists Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, and Steve Gadd.

On Martinez's 2016 album titled Habana Dreams, the guest artists were Wynton Marsalis, Ruben Blades, Angélique Kidjo, and Issac Delgado.
