Part 14 of the Virtual 8-Bit Console series.
In this episode I build the Palette Editor — the tool that lets the console pick its 16-colour working palettes for the 4bpp graphics mode, all sourced from a fixed 256-colour system palette.
The system palette itself also gets a major upgrade. I remove three Tailwind-inspired colour blocks and replace them with the real 8-bit hardware colours from the BBC Micro, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum 48k. This gives the console an authentic retro flavour while keeping the structure of the original palette.
From here, sprites, tilemaps and asset importers will all rely on these 16-colour palettes. This is the moment the console starts to feel like real hardware, with a proper tooling pipeline behind it.
