Isothiazolinones:
-Most of these are in the form of:
Methylisothiazolinone (MIT, MI)
Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT, CMI, MCI)
Benzisothiazolinone (BIT)
Octylisothiazolinone (OIT, OI)
Dichlorooctylisothiazolinone (DCOIT, DCOI)
Butylbenzisothiazolinone (BBIT)
-Common synthetic biocides/preservatives found in many skin and hair products as well as industrial products. Also, discussed is the historical use of isothiazolinones and the current epidemic due to the rise in usage among consumer products.
-Many countries are looking at partial or full bans of the substance due to the known dangers in using the biocide
-Used in shampoos, dishwashing products, household cleansers, face soaps, hand sanitizers, sunscreens, air fresheners.
-The first cases of ACD to MCI/MI were reported in 1985 from cosmetic use, marking the beginning of the first epidemic to isothiazolinones.
-More than 250 articles to date in PubMed have spoken to the health risks associated with MCI/MI in shampoos, conditioners, skincare lotions, and other cosmetic products.
-In 2013, MI was named allergen of the year by the ACDS due to its growing recognition as a sensitizer and its increased use in cosmetics as a preservative

SLS- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate- an irritating ingredient:
-Functions primarily as a surfactant, but can also be used as a skin-conditioning agent, emulsifier, and solvent. SLS is one of the most sensitizing and irritating cleansing ingredients used in skincare products.
-It’s considered a standard comparison substance for measuring the skin sensitization of other ingredients.
-Also used in many toothpastes so if you get irritation around your mouth it could be this, or other minty ingredients!

Menthol:
Derived from peppermint and gives a cooling effect. Used in many shampoos, especially anti-dandruff ones as well as many lip products such as plumping glosses. Generally that cooling effect is your skin being sensitized.
It's a natural compound that comes from the essential oil of Mentha species (peppermint oil contains 40-50% menthol) and it gives them the minty scent. Menthol has itch reducing, antibacterial, and penetration enhancing properties, but it also acts as an irritant that increases trans-epidermal water loss and dries out the skin.

Szechuan peppercorn:
Also seen in ingredient lists under the name Zanthoxylum Bungeanum Fruit Extract. Also related to Black Pepper Oil- used in products to give a numbing/ plumping effect. Also can be listed as Capsicum. This is very sensitizing to skin and can irritate it. Seen often in lip plumping products, Kate Somerville also uses this in many of the brands serums.
Smaller amounts has said to potential work as an antioxidant, although the risk of irritation is high, especially in the eye area.
Also used in higher amounts in a product we've all heard of: Pepper Spray for Personal Defense

Acetic Acid- The acid found in vinegar, some fruits, and human sweat. It can be sensitizing, irritating and drying to skin, in larger amounts. but in tiny amounts, it's used to set the pH of the cosmetic formula. Silver, Gold, Borate, Apple Cider Vinegar, Arnica, Horse Chestnut Extract all have the potential to irritate skin as well.
