Ikea Lighting Hack for YouTube Office Background

Life is busy, hectic, noisy and wild. Sometimes you just want somewhere to hang out that’s not right in the middle of the action. Or perhaps “you” are the action and you’re trying to give the audience something more appealing to look at. Today we tackle that project. I don’t typically film “talking head” style videos but might in the future. Primarily I am hoping to create an atmosphere in my office that’s welcoming and comfortable to hang out in. Different than the cold nature of the desk and screen I so often am staring at.
To make over my space I am turning to an Ikea lighting hack and some furniture/knick knacks from around my house. You could procure all of the items from Amazon, Homegoods or wherever suits your taste. The goal was to bring some dimension to a flat space. I pulled the couch away from the wall adding to the depth of the scene, inserted a “couch table” I previously built, added a few knick knacks and moved up the wall. The LED lights on the table were previously there and add to the ambiance of the space. Initially I had a print leaning on the wall but that proved to be distracting when filming so it was removed.
The lighting is where this project really goes to the next level. While pursuing Ikea for a standing desk I saw these lights and thought they would make the perfect backdrop, while falling in line with the decor in our house. The only problem was I felt they were a little plain just hanging from the ceiling. That’s were the aged beam “2x4” comes into play. By distressing a standard 6 foot 2x4 and suspending it from the ceiling I was able to achieve a new level of design. Though not short of issues in the build, primarily to my haste in measurement, in the end it worked out and now serves as the space I was looking to create. Thanks for watching!
