It began with Foreigner’s powerful ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is,” before Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson took Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “I Know Him So Well” to the top.

Dead or Alive spun into No.1 with “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record),” and Philip Bailey with Phil Collins soared with “Easy Lover.” The summer was owned by Sister Sledge’s “Frankie” and Madonna’s very first UK chart-topper “Into the Groove.”

Later, Jennifer Rush ruled with “The Power of Love,” the year’s biggest-selling single and as Christmas approached, Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love for You” and Shakin’ Stevens’ festive “Merry Christmas Everyone” closed out a year where pop, soul, and ballads shared the spotlight.
