Bach’s Italian Concerto is a dazzling reimagining of the concerto principle within the solo keyboard medium. Written for a two-manual harpsichord, it creates the illusion of contrasting solo and orchestral forces—an innovation that allows Bach to explore the grandeur and interplay of a full concerto with a single instrument. The first movement brims with vitality, its effervescent themes propelled by rhythmic drive. The central Andante is among Bach’s most sublime creations, its haunting melody floating above a steady pulse, evoking an aria sung over a slow-moving bass. The final Presto is sheer exhilaration—fleet, virtuosic, and utterly joyful. This is Bach’s homage to the Italian style, transformed through his own contrapuntal genius into something uniquely his own.
