We packed our jam, rice cakes and a banoffee pie, then set off from a live band event in Bristol, heading all the way to Stonehenge in Salisbury to catch the sunrise on the summer solstice. It’s a truly special occasion - thousands gather to dance, reflect, and patiently await the first light of the longest day of the year. Over 25,000 people were in attendance, making it incredibly busy. We found ourselves packed like sardines in the centre of the stones. While speaking with a well-distinguished gentleman who’d attended last year, he mentioned that the solstice falling on a weekend this time had made it much more appealing to tourists, which explained the amount of facing appearing in the light.
It felt strange and almost surreal to arrive and see rows of food vans and festival-style setups surrounding such an ancient, spiritual site. There were burger stalls, falafel wraps, churros, even coffee trucks - it was like we’d stepped into a small pop-up festival. At first, it felt out of place, like something sacred was being turned into spectacle. But then again, with over 25,000 people attending, it made sense.
A very special way to way to spend the longest day. It marks something special in me head.
