Bobby Fischer DESTROYS His Own Mentor in Epic Chess Upset! (1960 US Championship Shocker)
----
In the 1960/61 United States Chess Championship held in New York, a dramatic showdown unfolded between two chess titans with a deeply personal connection. William Lombardy, a Catholic priest and former mentor to the young Bobby Fischer, faced off against his prodigy in round 2 on December 19, 1960. Lombardy, who had coached Fischer during his early years and even helped him prepare for international tournaments, was White, while the 17-year-old Fischer played Black. This game, often dubbed "Forgive Me, Father" in chess lore (a playful nod to Lombardy's priesthood), showcased Fischer's ruthless precision and marked a symbolic passing of the torch from teacher to student.
The opening was a Sicilian Defense (ECO B54), a sharp and aggressive choice by Fischer that set the tone for a complex middlegame. Lombardy opted for a setup resembling the Maroczy Bind—a solid structure with pawns on c4 and e4 to cramp Black's position—but Fischer dismantled it with dynamic counterplay.
Key moves and analysis:

Early Opening (Moves 1-8): The game began classically: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. f3 Nc6 6. c4 e6 7. Nc3 Be7 8. Be3 O-O. Lombardy reinforced his center with c4, aiming for spatial control, while Fischer castled kingside, preparing for central breaks.
Central Explosion (Moves 9-12): Lombardy played 9. Nc2 to support his knights, but Fischer struck with 9...d5!, a bold pawn sacrifice to open lines. After 10. cxd5 exd5 11. Nxd5 Nxd5 12. Qxd5, White seemed to have a strong queen in the center, but Fischer's 12...Qc7 pressured the position.
Tactical Fireworks (Moves 13-18): 13. Qb5 Bd7 14. Rc1 Nb4 15. Nxb4 Qxc1+ 16. Bxc1 Bxb5 17. Nd5 Bh4+! This move, famously described by Fischer as "the scorpion's sting at the tail-end of the combination," forced 18. g3 Bxf1, trading bishop for rook while disrupting White's kingside. Fischer later annotated this in his book My 60 Memorable Games (Game 25), noting how it exploited White's underdeveloped position.
Middlegame Maneuvers (Moves 19-30): With queens off the board early, the game transitioned to a technical battle. Fischer's pieces coordinated beautifully: 19. Kxf1 Bd8 20. Bd2 Rc8 21. Bc3 f5, advancing pawns to challenge White's e4 pawn. Lombardy pushed 22. e5, but Fischer's 22...Rc5 23. Nb4 Ba5 24. a3 Bxb4 25. axb4 Rd5 centralized his rook effectively.
Endgame Domination (Moves 31-43): After exchanges like 30. Re1 Rxc3+ 31. bxc3 Rxe5+, the game entered a rook endgame where Fischer's active king proved decisive. 33...Kd5 34. Kd2 Kc4 invaded White's position, and Fischer's pawn advances (e.g., 37...f4 38. g4 a5) created passed pawns. The finale saw Fischer's king marching forward: 41...Kxc3 42. Kxa4 Kd4 43. Kb4 Ke3, leading to resignation as Black's king supported promotion threats while White's was cut off.

Fischer's victory highlighted his superior endgame technique, active piece play, and ability to convert small advantages. Lombardy, despite his experience, couldn't counter Fischer's aggressive dismantling of the bind. This game not only contributed to Fischer's undefeated run in the championship (he finished 9/11, sharing first with Lombardy who scored 7.5/11) but also underscored his rapid rise. In My 60 Memorable Games, Fischer provided extensive notes, praising his own tactical alertness while critiquing Lombardy's passive choices, like not developing faster. Historically, it symbolizes Fischer outgrowing his mentor, who later served as his second in the 1972 World Championship against Spassky. For chess enthusiasts, it's a masterclass in Sicilian counterplay and endgame king activity.
