Rolex Milgauss: why I bought it (and does it disappoint?)

Size
The Milgauss has a forty millimeter steel case that measures just over 57 millimeter lug to lug. And it’s one hundred meters water resistant. It is also equipped with the Oyster bracelet with an easylink five millimeter extension.
Its thickness measures just over eighteen millimeters and this also was one of the reasons I hesitated for quite some time before buying it. But until now, it hasn’t bothered me for a single second.

Movement
On the technical side, everything is exactly as solid as you might expect from a Rolex. There is just no brand that offers this combination of reliability, accuracy and solidness.
The watch is powered by the calibre 3131, which of course is chronometer certified and regulated to an accuracy of -2/+2 sec/day, after casing.
It also has a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring.

#Rolex
The watch was first introduced in 1954 with Reference Number 6543 and it really is unusual at many levels.
First of all, because it wasn’t made for explorers, but for scientists. More precisely: scientists at the particle physics laboratory in Geneva. Rolex wanted to make a watch able to withstand magnetical fields to 1000 gauss, hence the name.
A gauss is a unit to measure a magnetic field and mille simply means thousand in French.
The protection against magnetism is done with the principle of a Faraday cage – a soft iron container around the movement.
This approach really is the epitome of Rolex making professional watches and a 1955 Milgauss Reference 6543 set an all-time record when it sold at Christie’s Auction in 2017 for $272,500.
The first Milgauss with the lightning bolt second hand and smooth bezel was introduced around 1956. It was finally discontinued in 1988. In 2007 it made a very surprising comeback in the Rolex catalogue. At first, everyone thought that the green glass would be temporary, but it’s still there… And it has been sitting unchanged in the collection for years, with nobody seemingly thinking this is kinda strange...

Why I chose it
Having fallen in love with the watch about a decade ago, I never dared to actually buy it. Scared that those expressive details might bore me after a while, I always went for safer choices.
But when I pulled the trigger on it this fall, I instantly knew I was doing the right thing.
From the moment I first saw it in the Rolex boutique in Amsterdam to the moment I left the building with it, I was walking on air.
Buying a Rolex is one thing, but buying the Rolex you’ve been dreaming of for over a decade is quite another.
