Freelance duck hunting is all about timing, especially when you get access to a Hot Spring. We were waiting for a cold front all season and when it finally hit, we timed it perfectly! We were on the only open water when the other bodies of water were locked up; it was game over!
This morning was even colder than day one with early morning temps around -10 and again, we got some light snow flurries throughout the day making for a duck hunter's dream. We didn't get as much footage on day two due to the extreme cold, but we did a couple of groups, unlike yesterday, where it was all singles and doubles.
This hunt all started when I drew a three-day non-resident waterfowl license for South Dakota. As much as I wanted to run up and hunt the early season, I knew if I waited, I would have the chance at some fat migratory green heads. I waited all season for a strong cold front and as soon as we saw sub-zero degree weather in the 3-day forecast, I started packing and headed for South Dakota. I arrived at 11:30 at night as the storm started to hit. The next morning we woke up at 4am to -5 degrees and light snow flurries, it was game on.
Again, on day two, the hot spring did it's job, acting like a magnet to all ducks passing by. Our small spread and jerk cord drew them all to finish inside 20 yards and we picked out all the drakes as they back paeadled into our spread.
Much like day one, Josh and I traded off shooting a perfect two-man limit of 10 Drake Mallards. When you pull that off, you know they are close and doing it right. In this case all the shots were inside 20 yards and my 16 ga on cylinder was almost too much shotgun.
A huge thanks to my buddy Josh for scouting this place out and putting us on them.
This same cold front we hunted in South Dakota sent more geese down to the Front Range of Colorado. I am off to chase these same geese down to the Front Range. I plan to close out the 2024 waterfowl season strong in my home state of Colorado!
