Within Temptation - The Promise live Rock Werchter (2002) and 20 years ON

"The Promise" is the fifth track from Within Temptation's second studio album, Mother Earth.

This is one of my favourite WT songs.

The first part is the 3rd person story telling part. Then the rest is the girl singing. The girl no longer had anything to live for, so sold her soul to bring her lover back. To do that she had to kill all the ones responsible for his death, and perhaps, as the beginning suggests, wouldn't get any rest before they were all dead.

Sharon has a mezzo soprano type of voice and a vocal range of five octaves.

Den Adel’s vocal style has developed over the years, from singing mainly in a soft head voice, to a much more chest voice based approach. She has used her full voice up very high into the fifth octave on occasion, though most of the time she will go up to the lower-mid fifth octave and use head voice above that.
She has used her head voice up throughout the fifth octave while just about reaching the sixth, and has also sang down fairly low, though she rarely sings lower than the upper third octave. Her part in paving the way for a more diverse music scene has had many positive effects since she joined Within Temptation in the 90s.
The impact she has had on diversity in rock and metal is not to be understated, because without Sharon den Adel, many bands and musicians who would follow wouldn't be the same.

This track is far the best version over the past two decades. Sharon voice at it peak here at the age of 28.
