Perturbations in lipid metabolism contribute to kidney injury and progression of chronic disease endpoints. In this webinar from the final of our 3rd PhD Student contest, Rebekah Nicholson of the University of Utah, USA describes how alterations in ceramide levels and metabolism are associated with kidney fibrosis and decline in kidney function. She further discusses how strategies to lower ceramide levels protected mice from acute kidney injury caused by renal ischemia and reperfusion. Collectively, this defines novel mechanisms driving ceramide-dependent renal injury and suggests a potentialtherapeutic method for combating kidney disease.
