At a heated UN Security Council meeting on August 27, Algeria’s U.N. ambassador Amar Bendjama displayed photos of starving and dead Palestinian children and a slain journalist to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He emotionally cited the death of 3-month-old Yahya al-Najjar from starvation and condemned the killing of journalist Mariam Abu Dagga. Bendjama criticized the Council’s inaction, especially after an Israeli strike on Nasser hospital killed 20 people, including five journalists. Israel’s U.N. ambassador Danny Danon rejected the claims, stating the children shown had pre-existing conditions and accused Bendjama of spreading misinformation. Bendjama defended his statements, citing reports from the U.N. and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which reported over 500,000 Gazans facing famine. Israel dismissed the IPC report as biased and called for its retraction. UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward called the famine "man-made" and urged Israel to lift aid restrictions to prevent further humanitarian disaster.
