The Houston Youth Symphony String Orchestra performs "March of the Meistersingers" from Die Meistersinger by Richard Wagner (Arr. Sandra Dackow) under the direction of Carolyn Vandiver.
This arrangement uses the main theme of Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger, which literally means Master Singer. The three-act Opera
takes place in Nuremberg in the 16th century. This was his only opera that did not have a mythological theme; in fact it was a comedy.
It is one of his longest operas taking four and a half hours to perform. This selection requires the orchestra to develop listening skills in
imitative phrases. It also provides the opportunity to develop a grand, majestic full tone.
