Fed Rate Cuts Won’t Fix Housing Market Troubles

Jerome Powell warned that recent and potential future rate cuts aren’t going to fix the U.S. housing market, saying that rate moves alone won’t meaningfully relieve housing stress because the core issues are structural, not just high borrowing costs. He stressed that the low supply of homes and the fact that many owners are “locked in” to ultra-low mortgage rates mean rate cuts do little to boost affordability or inventory. The Fed doesn’t have the tools to solve the housing shortage that’s driving high prices and weak market activity — so even with lower Fed rates, housing market troubles are likely to persist.
