Southern Marin Fire Protection District Receives Recognition As Top 15 Fire Service Agencies In 2024

At this week’s International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)’s Fire-Rescue International (FRI) Conference, the IAFC recognized the Southern Marin Fire Protection District as one of the top 15 fire service leaders from across North America and around the globe worthy of profiling to the International Fire Service Community. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) represents the leadership of firefighters and emergency responders worldwide. Every year at the FRI conference, a handful of fire-rescue and emergency service organizations are honored based on their excellence and innovation among the international community through vision, information, education, services, and representation.

The Southern Marin Fire Protection District has transformed over the past decade, evolving from a financially strained organization with aging equipment to a pioneering force in fire protection and emergency response. Rooted in strong values and a unified vision, the Fire District now excels in safeguarding a complex and diverse region that includes large bodies of water, hillside homes, and mountainous terrain. By leveraging cutting-edge technology like real-time satellite imagery, Tablet Command, and LRAD systems, the Fire District has significantly enhanced their operational efficiency and response capabilities, setting a national standard in fire safety.

About the Southern Marin Fire Protection District
The Fire District now serves the cities of Sausalito and Mill Valley, as well as the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry, approximately 1/4 of the town of Tiburon, the City of Sausalito, Fort Baker and the Marin Headlands. The Fire District covers over 25.3 square miles, a population of approximately 41,576 and over 20,500 homes and commercial properties. Each of our zones is protected by one Type 1 engine with each of the zones cross-staffing at least one specialty piece of equipment such as a Ladder Truck, Fire Boat, Jet Skis, Inflatable Rescue Boat and Type 3 Engine. The Fire District also provides ALS transport services. The Fire District has two ambulances and one ALS Medium Rescue.
