"一定" (yídìng) and "不一定" (bù yídìng) are very practical expressions in HSK 3-4 Chinese grammar, primarily used to express certainty or uncertainty.

"一定" (yídìng) mainly has two uses:
1. Expressing Necessity or Certainty:
This means something is bound to happen or a judgment is absolutely true.
• Structure: Subject + 一定 + Verb / Adjective / Phrase
• Examples:
他学习很努力，这次考试一定能考好。
He studies very hard, he will certainly do well on this test. (Expresses strong affirmation and prediction)
你放心，我一定会准时到的。
Don't worry, I will definitely be on time. (Expresses a promise or determination)

2. Expressing Emphasis (Must / Be sure to):
This means someone is required to do something, carrying a tone of command or request, and is usually placed before the verb.
• Structure: Subject + 一定要 + Verb Phrase
• Examples:
明天有重要的会议，你一定要早点儿来。
There is an important meeting tomorrow, you must/have to come early. (Expresses a requirement)
这个药一定要饭后吃。
This medicine must be taken after meals. (Expresses a rule or necessity)

"不一定" (bù yídìng)
"不一定" is the negative form of "一定," expressing uncertainty, meaning "not necessarily" or "not bound to be."
• Structure: Subject + 不一定 + Verb / Adjective / Phrase
• Meaning: This means something might happen, but also might not, lacking absolute certainty.
• Examples:
多花钱买的东西不一定是最好的。
Things that cost more money are not necessarily the best. (Expresses that the judgment is not absolutely correct)
今天天气很好，但明天不一定是晴天。
The weather is great today, but tomorrow may not be sunny. (Expresses reservation or an uncertain prediction about the future)
会说中文的人不一定去过中国。
People who can speak Chinese have not necessarily been to China. (Expresses that there is no absolute relationship between the condition and the result)
