This great song was written by Scottish musicians Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan, and first recorded by their band Stealers Wheel in 1972. It charted at #8 in the UK Singles Chart and reached #6 in the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Many people today associate the song with Quentin Tarrantino's 1992 film, 'Reservoir Dogs', in which it is played over a gruesome, torture scene.
In his Daily Telegraph obituary of Gerry Rafferty. Martin Chilton suggested the song was "Written as a parody of Bob Dylan's paranoia, it ridiculed a music industry cocktail party..." Stealers Wheel were astonished by the single's chart success.
