In 1920, a fantastic chess match took place between one of the key figures of hypermodernism, Richard Réti, and a 19-year-old future World Champion, Max Euwe. The match was only four games long — but what games they were. Two of them featured brilliant double rook sacrifices that led to stunning checkmating attacks. Another one demonstrated a deep hypermodern opening strategy ending in a beautiful checkmate. And in one more game, we’ll witness a heroic fight against ghosts. Today, we begin with Game 1 — the masterpiece that Savielly Tartakower called “The Minor Immortal.” Minor, because it ended in just 20 moves. And Immortal… well, let’s see why he called it that.
