The 2B16 Nona-K is a 120 mm towed artillery weapon that combines the advantages of a howitzer and a mortar . It is intended for the destruction of artillery batteries, defense structures, command posts, manpower, artillery and other military equipment

Origin and development
In 1981, the 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled artillery gun with a 120 mm 2A51 cannon was introduced in the Soviet army. The new weapon soon underwent its baptism of fire in Afghanistan , where all its features and capabilities were fully confirmed.

Based on these results from the first combat deployment of the 2S9, a proposal appeared to create a towed version of the 2A51 cannon. Such artillery means could complement other artillery systems and improve the firepower and maneuverability of airborne units and ground forces.

The development of the new howitzer was entrusted to the Perm Engineering Plant VI Lenina, which was also behind the creation of the 2A51 cannon. The weapon was designated 2B16 and named "Nona-K". Considering that it was a redesign of an existing weapon, the development did not take too much time. Tests of the first prototype began in 1984 and lasted 2 years. In 1986, serial production of the new howitzer was launched and the Nona-K was introduced into service. The production took place for a relatively short time, only until 1989, so it was not possible to produce more than 190 pieces.

Construction
Nona-K is characterized by small dimensions and weight. Its length does not exceed 4.6 meters and its weight is 1200 kg. This simplifies the transport of the weapon and its use on the battlefield. In the past, common tractors for 2B16 were GAZ-66 and Ural-4320 trucks , but the light UAZ-469 /3151 can also cope with this task .

The 2B16 has a 120 mm caliber gun that ranges from -10° to +80°. The Nona-K is equipped with an active multi-chamber muzzle brake. Due to the large number of transverse baffles, it compensates about 30% of the recoil energy. Aiming is done using a manual drive and a 1P9 sight.

Nona-K can use a wide range of ammunition - high explosive, cumulative and cluster. The range of such projectiles reaches 8-8.8 km; when using reactive ammunition, this parameter increases to 12.8 km. Due to the special design, high-explosive fragmentation missiles have a power at the level of 152 mm ammunition
