These songs show up on every “greatest rock & roll songs ever” list… but a lot of them do NOT deserve the hype. Today we’re counting down 10 so‑called classics where the legend is bigger than the music — from radio overkill to lazy songwriting and marketing myths. You’re definitely going to disagree with a few of these, so keep score in your head and tell me in the comments how many of your favorites I just called overrated.

“Wonderwall” by Oasis turned into a global campfire anthem in 1995. For a lot of rock fans, especially in the US, it is the only Oasis song they can name. Meanwhile, whole albums like “Definitely Maybe” are begging for attention, and Liam and Noel have both complained over the years that people reduce them to that one slightly dreary acoustic strum.

“November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses might be the ultimate early-’90s epic. For some, it is goosebumps and lighters in the air. For others, it is the moment GNR shifted from dangerous bar band to overblown arena opera. The video reportedly cost a fortune, and you can feel every dollar on screen. Whether that serves the song or smothers it is still an open argument.

But listen to what Sting has said over the years. He has described it as a song about surveillance, control, and obsession, written during a messy breakup. The verses are almost stalker-like. Yet it is still a wedding staple. Couples slow-dance to a song about someone watching your every move.
For rock fans who loved the raw energy of early Police—songs like “So Lonely” and “Next to You”—“Every Breath You Take” represents the moment the band became a polished adult-contemporary act. Immensely successful, yes. But when people call it one of the greatest rock songs ever, a lot of listeners quietly look back at the more adventurous tracks and shake their heads.

“Stairway to Heaven” was never released as a commercial single in the U.S., yet it became one of the most played songs in FM radio history. It begins as a gentle folk tune, builds through multiple sections, and ends in that soaring Jimmy Page solo that every teenage guitarist has tried to copy in a music shop.
There has been legal controversy over the opening guitar figure, with claims it was lifted from the song “Taurus” by Spirit, though courts ultimately ruled in Zeppelin’s favor. There has been endless debate about the lyrics, with Robert Plant himself later sounding a little weary of them.
Many Zeppelin fans quietly prefer the crunch of “Black Dog,” the weirdness of “Kashmir,” the groove of “When the Levee Breaks,” or the raw blues of the early records. “Stairway” is the beginner’s gateway, a well-crafted piece of music, but also the song that has kept casual listeners from exploring the full depth of the catalogue.
