Boil ‘Em Cabbage Down is a classic folk song for fiddle players. The earliest recording was made in 1924 by Uncle Dave Macon, but its origins began as an African American hoedown almost 400 years ago. The “hoedown” was a combination of the styles of early African American and European American fiddlers that merged African percussive string playing with Scotch and Irish “reels”. Boiled cabbage is a Southern style of cooking with roots from the African region involving cooking any type of leafy green vegetable (O’Connor 2009, 4). This is a great traditional tune to learn fiddle for beginner to advanced players, and versions of this tune are often played in jam sessions and contests in styles from Old-Time to Bluegrass.
