James Ben Ali Haggin allegedly handed Marcus Daly his checkbook with every blank check signed and said, “draw and keep drawing.” Haggin's fortune, built over 30 years of struggle, gave him compassion for a young and struggling Daly. His checkbook funded the Anaconda smelter and kept the company afloat through price wars, attempts to corner the copper market, fires, sabotage and mine disasters. Haggin and Daly were also bonded closely through their love of racehorses and between them created a turf empire that still influences modern horse racing.
