Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) was an internationally renowned concert pianist, composer, conductor, and soprano from Venezuela. She moved to Paris as a teenager where she frolicked with the likes of Charles Gounod and Franz Liszt, and was taught by Gioachino Rossini. Also known for her sizable catalogue of solo piano and chamber works, her impact was not lost on other composers of the time such as Amy Beach and Edward MacDowell, both of whom made her the dedicatee of their own piano concerti. This simple lullaby, dedicated to her loving father, perfectly demonstrates her early Romantic nature and affinity for the piano.
