Teaching in the 21st century has greatly evolved over the last decade; from traditional book-based approaches to varied, advanced strategies and technology-assisted learning. Additionally, what we are now observing is a much more inclusive approach to education in many fields, including medical and science education, which focuses on embracing uniqueness, diversity and individual learning styles. Educators try to enhance the learning experience for their students using a variety of available tools and methods.
Multimodal learning seems to be one of the most effective strategies – not only does it allow for multiple modes of instruction for teachers, but it also welcomes more personalised ways of delivery for learners. The benefits to incorporating this style in class are numerous. It promotes creativity and innovation, develops critical and analytical thinking in learners as well as communication skills through teamwork. Due to the fact that medical and science education is gaining more and more popularity among students globally, who wish to tackle and find solutions to modern day issues, multimodal learning applications deserve a closer look. Educators should be better aware of how multimodal strategies impact students’ abilities to understand, retain and recall information. What is more, student engagement and motivation levels can be significantly increased by applying multiple sensory channels of communication, such as visual, auditory, special or linguistic. As we know, everything, from the placement of images to the organisation of the content, conveys meaning, and our brains process it in a unique way. Therefore, perception and interpretation of the facts presented may differ among students.
The workshop covered these crucial methodological aspects, as well as offer some practical ideas on how medical and science education teachers can accelerate brain functions or strengthen neural connections made in students’ brains using a multisensory teaching style.
