This Ashford & Simpson classic has been an iconic 60’s love song since it was first released in 1967. For decades it has been used in TV and movies such as “Stepmom“, ”Remember the Titans”, and ”Guardians of the Galaxy”. Diana Ross’ 1970 cover version would also go on to be her first #1 song as a solo artist. Today it is still brand new and climbing the charts at #29 on its way to #19 by mid-July.
Today’s telephone interviewer on the Hotline is Denise Wyatt. Also dancing today are: Rick McNay at 1:28, Frank Vanderpuil at 1:38, Michael Michaud at 1:41, Judy Michaud (winner of the Swing Dance Contest in April with Frank Vanderpuil) at 2:01, Frank Herrera at 2:07, Steve Roderick at 2:15, Buddy Schwimmer (crushing it!) at 2:41, Famous Hooks at 3:06, Marcia Silverman & Stan Sobern at 3:17, and Don Sanuskar & Deedra Higgins on the right side of the riser at 1:55.
Marvin Gaye did briefly go into acting. He was in 2 movies, “The Ballad of Andy Crocker” (‘69) and “Chrome and Hot Leather” (’71).
Sadly, in 4 months (Oct. 14) Tammi would collapse into Marvin’s arms while performing together at a concert in Virginia and was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly thereafter. Despite being ill, she and Marvin went on to record several more songs together including “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing“ (#8 in ‘68) and “You’re All I Need To Get By” (#7 in ’68) before she passed away in 1970. Marvin fell into a deep depression after her death which led, in part, to the creation of his “What’s Going On” album in 1971.
