In this video, I'll walk you through the optimal settings I use to run BirdNET Pi on a Raspberry Pi 4b for the best possible results and performance. If you want to get more bird detections and fine-tune your existing setup, these are the key adjustments that made a huge difference for me. We'll start with essential tweaks to the Raspberry Pi itself, including how I overclock it for faster processing and disable Wi-Fi power management to keep it from disconnecting.
Inside the BirdNET Pi settings, I'll show you why I lower the "Species Occurrence Frequency Threshold" to 1%, which helps capture more local species that the default settings might miss. I'll also cover my audio settings, such as using a 9-second recording length and changing the format to FLAC for better quality. We'll lower the confidence level to 0.5 to make sure we don't discard valid detections that are just below the threshold.
Finally, I'm going to share a crucial secret tip that'll help you save your flash media, like microSD cards and USB sticks, from failing. I'll show you how to enable the RAM disk feature, which uses your Pi's RAM for all the constant processing, dramatically reducing wear and tear on your storage.
