NOTES FOR QUILTING ON A STANDARD SEWING MACHINE
Preparing Quilt Sandwich for Quilting:
Pin every 2-4 inches.
Pin through all 3 layers.
Keep it pulled taut
If preferred, baste rather than pin.
Use any kind of safety pin, but curved pins work best.
For Quilting:
Straighten the fabric as you quilt.
Don’t quilt from top and from bottom. Do all quilting from top to bottom.
Check the sandwich back often to make sure there are no tucks.
Help move fabric along with your hands. (Use quilting or gardening gloves, if preferred, with anti-slip fabric or dots.)
Sew either in straight lines, curved lines, or use patterns or designs.
For even lines of quilting, mark with pins, masking tape, chaulk, or guides that plug into the back of the walking foot.
The first row is the most difficult. It gets easier as you go.
For Sewing Machine:
Start with a new needle.
Use the same thread as your fabric (cotton for cotton, polyester for polyester, etc.) or use Dual Duty thread.
Use the same thread on top and in the bobbin.
Have an extra bobbin or two prepared before starting your quilting.
Have plenty of thread on the spool when starting the quilting process.
Use a walking foot.
Adjust your sewing machine for heavy fabric by using the instructions for your particular sewing machine.
