Hexagonal tiles can be unforgiving if you don't pay attention to the minor details
The laser here was showing a slight rise in tile

Scribe cutting is needed to level out the tile

Having a grinder connected to a dust extractor is awesome for cutting indoors

For the tile curving around tub rim, hold short of L-notch to shape the curvature of tub

A grinding style cutting blade makes this easy

This is one instance that I think setting a ledger board makes a lot of sense 👍
Once tile is set for around tub rim, simply attach a straight edge level to bottom of tile

Be sure to set laser & fine tune spacing

Drywall can quickly zap the moisture out of thinset
If thinset is left on surface too long, it will skin over an not bond to tiles well
Be sure to dampen drywall surface before troweling, and avoid spreading too much thinset out at once

It's easiest & to end wainscoting at a half tile
Also looks better IMO
The overall height in this situation was 46 1/2"
I'd say most wainscotings are between 46-52"
It's a custom tile project....so you can do what you want 😄


Same goes for side wall of tub
I would recommend ending tile a couple of inches outside of the tub
This way if you install shower doors, you have tile extending outside of tub area


For edging, we decided to use a PVC Schluter Rondec Edging (rondec white) that matches the grout - https://bit.ly/3stjftf
Schluter edging comes in a huge variety of colors

Apply plenty of thinset for setting rondec into place

Shim, tape & adjust edging to fit
In most situations I recommend choosing the same size rondec thickness as tile thickness
3/8" rondec for 3/8" tile
