Tiffany’s Journey to Losing 65 lbs with The Sleeve Clinic

Tiffany lost 65 lbs after receiving life-changing bariatric surgery at The Sleeve Clinic in Toronto, Ontario.

Prior to sleeve surgery, Tiffany’s weight held her back from her goal of pursuing a career in policing. “I did the volunteering, I did the education, got experience in the field, but it was the fitness requirement that I wasn’t even close to passing.” When Tiffany pushed herself physically, she experienced pain in her ankles, knees, hips and back. “I never would have said I had a bad quality of life. I just didn't know how much better it could get.” Since surgery, Tiffany has developed a healthier mindset and outlook on the future, she has also achieved numerous fitness goals much faster than she ever could have anticipated.

Our team sat down with Tiffany to ask her a few questions about her weight loss journey with The Sleeve Clinic:

What was the final straw?
“I’d been in a really down and dark place. I had a bit of depression, I had just gotten over a divorce, I had just lost my job and then a very close friend of mine had passed away. So, I took a moment of reflection. I was like, why am I the way that I am? Where do I want to be? And what's stopping me from getting there?”

What fears did you have going in?
“Definitely that it wouldn't work, because at that point, I would just feel like things were so hopeless, there was nothing else I could try. I also think the stigma of treating it like it was a secret that people would find out was really scary for me.”

What was your surgical experience like?
“I definitely wasn't one of those people that were out doing their day-to-day by day three after surgery. Every day, I physically felt better than the day before. I went back to work at the two-week mark, and I work a physical job. I did really well.”

How has your life changed since having a gastric sleeve?
“I feel healthier mentally, I have a much more positive outlook on life. I'm able to do a lot more and I'm close to achieving my goals that I didn't think would be possible for at least another two years. I couldn't picture myself running more than a mile and a half. I never imagined that I could run five kilometres, but now I do that recreationally.”

What does it feel like to have a gastric sleeve?
“It kind of stopped those binge cycles and I’m more comfortable establishing a routine. This is breakfast, this is lunch, this is dinner, this is a snack. I still feel hungry. I still feel full. I don't physically feel much different other than I'm more in control, and that lets me be a little bit more mindful if I'm having a craving. Also, having the ability to recognize that it’s just a craving and to say no. I am still able to eat all of my favourite things, I just eat a lot less of them and I want a lot less of them.”

What has the aftercare been like?
“It's very comforting to have that 24-hour support. I have people I can instantly call up or email or text and get an answer right away. When I speak to other people that have had surgery in other countries, the big thing is they have all these questions and no answers because they have never had anyone do anything but go through surgery.”

Was it worth the cost?
“First of all, investing in yourself is the best investment you can make. I would probably do it at twice the cost if I knew this is how I would feel.”

What advice do you have for people considering a sleeve?
“If I gave any advice to anyone, it would be don’t put it off. I do wish that I had done this ten years ago because I think, where would I be now? Even in one year, your life can change so dramatically, you're going to want more of that.”
