On August 28, 2025, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil publicly announced key decisions of the 33rd Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad, India. Following approval from the Apostolic See, four new ecclesiastical provinces were established—Faridabad, Ujjain, Kalyan, and Shamshabad—with new Metropolitan Archbishops appointed for each. Additionally, Rev. Fr. James Patteril CMF and Rev. Fr. Joseph Thachaparambath CMI were named Bishops of Belthangady and Adilabad, respectively. The Synod also reorganized the territorial boundaries of 12 eparchies outside Kerala to better serve the Church's faithful across India. These major structural changes mark a historic milestone in the mission and growth of the Syro-Malabar Church.
