My color workflow // Using CST in DaVinci Resolve 16 // Body & Earth BTS

Hey beautiful people, it's ya boy Joshua martin - today I will be talking about my grading process and a little bts of my latest film "body & earth".

I never really talked about grading because I was never confident in it. But in the last 8 months, I've been slowly building that confidence, especially when I was learning how to use Davinci Resolve 15 now 16. Putting myself in several Facebook groups about grading, took online courses and watched youtube videos. And I also teamed up with a colorist, Joshua Bennett, who colored my film Lost Souls -    • LOST SOULS - a visual expression // Bmpcc ...  .

I say all of this because its important to face challenges and learn what you can, either in your career and in life. I know I'm not going to be a colorist but most of my budgets for the film projects don't allow to hire a colorist, so it's up to me.

In this particular case filming with the bmpcc4k - I know for a fact putting a creative lut and going from there will be under minding the power of this little camera and what it can produce. I've seen some amazing colorwork that people have produced in BRAW. so I wanted to really understand how I can maximize my color workflow with BRAW.

To get to the point with this project. After doing some research I found this YouTuber who used the CST and the Arri rec709 to get "Arri" like colors. More especially to get better greens and highlight roll-off. This really applied to me. So I experimented.

METHOD 1
Using Color Space transform, Arri rec 709 and buttery luts

Nod 1

Color tab - ResolveFX color - Color space transform

Input Color Space - BMD 4k Film V3

Input Gama - BMPCC4K Film

Output Color Space - BMD 4.6k Film V3

Output Gama - Cineon Film Log

Nod 3

Place Arri Lut to rec709

Nod 2 - adjustment nod

Highlight
Saturation
Shadows
etc

METHOD 2
NODE 1

Input Color Space: Blackmagic Design Pocket 4K Film Gen 4
Input Gamma: Blackmagic Design Pocket 6K Film Gen 4
Output Color Space: ARRI Alexa
Output Gamma: ARRI LogC

NODE 2

This is where your grade happens

NODE 3

Input Color Space: ARRI Alexa
Input Gamma: ARRI LogC
Output Color Space: Rec. 709
Output Gamma: Rec. 709

(You might choose to do sRGB for Output Color / Gamma since you’re going straight to web)

METHOD 3
NODE 2 CST

Input Color Space: ARRI Alexa
Input Gamma: ARRI LogC
Output Color Space: sRGB
Output Gamma: sRGB

NODE 1

This is reserved for highlight control. If highlights are too hot in node 2 dial back with Highlight log control (fine-tune High Range as needed)

Corrections made here (assuming you’re not using a creative LUT)
