“A Kind of Blue” is an important album, in that it brought jazz to many people who had not really engaged with it before. 1959 and stereo recording was also extremely novel, and allowed musical expression to come across even more, with spatial awareness adding to the mix.
Also on the album are two blues standards, and the tune “so what” is in one key, then up a half step, then back again. A simple form, on which to explore melodic ideas.
Today, I talk through “Blue in Green”, a more complicated harmonic structure, but with the power of the pentatonic to help explore it with musical expression and phrasing being the most important.
