Discover the magic of underpainting in this soft pastel tutorial as I show how one color—purple—completely transformed my painting of creamy coneflowers.

I’ll walk you through my simple 2-step method for choosing the perfect underpainting color, and explain why it works every time. In this painting, the purple base adds depth, vibrancy, and harmony—far more than starting on plain cream paper ever could.

I begin with some beautiful purple hues on a sheet of cream-colored Canson Velvet paper. I allow the purple to shine through with a light touch in my layering. That choice gave the painting depth, energy, and harmony that would have been lost without it.
