Ligier JS11/15 F1 Car in action: Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 Pure Sound!

Built and designed for the 1979 Formula 1 season, the Ligier JS11 was a ground-effect car that was able to win three races and achieve the third place in the constructors' championship. After a great start of the '79 season, winning the first two round and the fifth, the car soon proved to have problems due to its amazing efficiency at producing downforce. In fact the almunium chassis could not handle the amount of downforce the JS11 was producing and as a result it began to flex, causing the skirts to lift off the ground and ruining the ground effect suction. The drivers in that season were Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler, who was replaced mid-season by Jacky Ickx after a hang-gliding accident.

In 1980 the JS11 was updated and improved and called JS11/15. The car was again very competitive but not at the same level of the Williams and Brabham. The Ligier team still scored two wins but these could have been more if it hadn't been for several suspension and tyre failures. Due to the immense pressure exerted on the suspension arms and the wheels by the ground effect, stress fractures developed on them causing to fail under hard braking. The team was still able to finish second in the constructors' championship. Drivers were Jacques Laffite and Didier Pironi.

This video is about chassis JS11/01, which was built and used in 1979 and then converted to the JS11/15 specs for 1980. I was able to see this car during the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and at the 2019 Oldtimer GP at the Nürburgring, racing in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. The driver is Matteo Ferrer-Aza.
