Mark di Suvero's "Untitled" (1977) is a monumental abstract sculpture held in the art collection of Martin Z. Margulies. While the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse in Miami's Wynwood Arts District is renowned for its contemporary art displays. For this artwork, Mark di Suvero used painted steel, tires, and rope as materials. The sculpture measures approximately 9.14 x 3.04 x 3.04 meters).
Created in 1977, this piece exemplifies di Suvero's signature approach to abstract expressionist sculpture. He incorporates industrial materials — often salvaged or found objects — welded into dynamic, gestural forms that suggest movement, balance, and energy. The inclusion of unconventional elements like tires and rope adds a kinetic, organic quality, allowing parts to potentially swing or interact with the environment, echoing the freedom and motion of Abstract Expressionist painters like Jackson Pollock or Franz Kline.
Mark di Suvero (born 1933 in Shanghai, China, to Italian parents) moved to the United States with his family at the age of eight in 1941, fleeing the onset of World War II and settling in San Francisco. A globally celebrated sculptor and a trailblazer in working with steel, he has produced energetic, motion-filled sculptures and paintings over more than six decades, blending lively expression with intricate structural design. His pieces have been regularly featured in galleries and museums around the world, with notable outdoor presentations in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, as well as various U.S. cities. In 2023, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas presented a significant survey of his work titled Steel Like Paper. He has also been the focus of major citywide exhibitions in Paris (France), Venice (Italy), and New York City. Examples of his enduring public presence include permanent sculptures installed in cities like Baltimore, Dallas, Grand Rapids, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, St. Louis, San Francisco, South Bend, and Toledo. In New York, his creations are part of the permanent holdings at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY. In 1985, di Suvero established Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York, transforming a former landfill into a vibrant space for artists and the community; it officially became a public park under city management in 1998.
