Yemaya Productions Engaging Our Communities is a program that engages scholars, artists, and the community to examine a social justice topic and to work collaboratively to produce an artistic piece that sheds light on a social justice issue. The goal of the program is to raise social awareness and to provide opportunities for activism and community engagement for program participants and the community at large. This year’s social justice topic is the impact of environmental injustice on communities of color and it will culminate with a social justice theatre production on Friday, September 7th in Pittsburgh. The program kicks-off on April 28th in Pittsburgh with a conference on environmental injustice followed by a series of community dialogue workshops and activities leading up to the theatre production. The intended outcome of Engaging Our Communities is that our multi-level and innovative approach will translate to increased community engagement and social awareness among participants.
