This is episode 42 from 1953 of the radio broadcast of Gunsmoke, which aired on October 17, 1953.
Dodge gets an unexpected visitor: Brandt Marshall rides in with a problem he can’t solve, and it’s waiting back at his ranch… locked in a root cellar.
A wounded “Indian raider” boy was captured during a horse raid, wild as a cornered bobcat and ready to die before he’ll accept help. Only he isn’t Indian at all. He’s white. And he’s been living with the Arapaho so long he barely remembers anything else, not even his full name.
Matt Dillon rides out, digs a bullet from the kid’s leg, and tries to pull him back from a world where “honor” means returning with a scalp or stolen horses. The boy calls himself Yorkie, and in his mind it’s still kill-or-be-killed.
Back in Dodge, Doc treats the fever… and Kitty steps in with something the boy hasn’t felt in years: warmth, patience, and the idea that he isn’t a prisoner. For a moment, it almost works.
Then Yorkie slips away and heads straight for the one thing he understands: horses.
What happens next is classic Gunsmoke: hard truth, quiet mercy, and a second chance offered the only way this town knows how, with work, trust, and a new name.
