From Wild to Wilder: Exploring Bremer Bay Tracks
This episode is all about pushing boundaries and exploring the incredible, rugged landscapes around Bremer Bay! 🌊🚙 Here’s how the adventure unfolded:
Starting Off: Fixes Before Fun
Before hitting the road, we checked out a dragging caliper on the rear driver’s side. Once sorted, we set off towards Devils Creek Inlet.
The Inlet: Stunning white, squeaky sands and a picturesque river flowing out to sea. While it was breathtaking, we couldn’t cross it and had to reroute.
Reef Beach: A Hidden Gem
Stopping by the local info center, we met a friendly local who tipped us off to some incredible tracks. First stop: Reef Beach.
The track in is a bit bumpy but manageable.
The Final Stretch: A steep sandy hill led us to a beach bordered by giant sand dunes—absolutely worth it!
Overnight Stay: We camped here, enjoying a magical sunset over the dunes and sea.
The next morning, we were slightly anxious about tackling the sandy hill on the way out, but our Unimog handled it with ease.
Doubtful Island Road: Corrugations Galore
Heading toward Doubtful Island Point, the drive on Doubtful Island Road started smooth but quickly deteriorated as the shire-maintained section ended.
The Reality: Shocking corrugations! Even with deflated tires, the ride was bone-jarring, forcing us to slow down.
From the Gordon Inlet turnoff, we took the track to Doubtful Island Point, encountering plenty of holes from people who’d had too much fun in the wet.
Peppermint Beach: The Ultimate Challenge
The real adventure began at the Peppermint Beach turnoff:
Overgrown Track: Narrow, with no room to turn around once committed.
Branch Clearing: We had to cut branches or knock down trees to keep moving. While not ideal, we felt strongly about maintaining accessibility—especially for potential fire response vehicles.
At the time, a significant bushfire was affecting the eastern Fitzgerald River National Park, motivating us to ensure the track remained passable.
Our Take on Track Maintenance
We believe in keeping tracks accessible for emergencies and future adventurers. If you’re heading out, consider:
Carrying a Chainsaw: To clear overgrowth and maintain passability.
Responsibility: Avoid unnecessary damage but prioritize accessibility, especially in fire-prone areas.
