Today’s walk starts on a drizzly Spring day from Changuimun, the North Gate of Seoul wall, across the Inwangsan Mountain all the way to the so-called ‘Ants Village’ nestled comfortably within a small valley at the foot of the mountain.
The village, originally called ‘Indian village’ by the locals, was formed after the Korean War as the people who didn’t have proper places to live began to settle with shanty houses built around unoccupied lands. As the name was considered derogatory, the village was changed to ‘Ants village’ or Gaemi Village where villagers lived diligently to earn a living despite their economic difficulties. The village was designated as a ‘Seoul Future Heritage,’ and has attracted m,ore attentions thanks to mural paintings and a TV program that features a celebrity who lives there.
On the way I passed by Whanki Art Museum dedicated to KIM Whanki who is known as one of the most important painters in Korean modern art, and Seokpajeong and Seould Art Museum, a traditional housing complex previously owned by Daewongun, the regent considered to be involved in the assassination of his own daughter-in-law, Empress Myeongseong.
Okcheonam, a small temple famous for so-called ‘White Buddha’ carved in low relief on a huge boulder is the place where today’s wet spring walk ends.
I hope you all enjoy the video.
