The US-German Strategic & Economic Partnership: Transatlantic Industry in an Age of Disruption

The Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology (CMIST), in collaboration with the German Embassy, hosted a strategic dialogue with leading German industry partners. This event explored collaborative approaches to advanced manufacturing technology and supply chain resilience in critical sectors, including next-generation energy systems, advanced computing, and a modernization of the defense industrial base.

In an era of heightened geopolitical risk, this roundtable examined practical frameworks for reshoring and friendshoring initiatives that strengthen transatlantic industrial partnerships while addressing tech security and supply chain vulnerabilities. Participants discussed actionable strategies for building more secure, diversified supply networks that leverage complementary strengths between German and US manufacturing capabilities.

This event featured Thorsten Scheer, Regional President of Bosch Mobility Electronics Division in North America and Plant Manager of the Semiconductor Fab; Dr. Dorothee Schneider, Head of the Economic and Trade Section at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, DC; and Jonathan Tubb, Industrial Cyber Security Officer, Gas Services North America, Siemens Energy, Inc. Harry Krejsa, CMIST Director of Studies, moderatee the discussion.

This event was a part of the larger series, "Discover Germany: A Global Destination for Research, Study and Work, sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, DC and co-sponsored by the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics (LCAL), the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT), and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

About our Speakers:
Thorsten Scheer is Plant Manager of the Bosch semiconductor fab in Roseville, California, Managing Director of Robert Bosch Semiconductor LLC, as well as Regional President for the Bosch Mobility Electronics division in North America. In this role he is integrating the Roseville site into Bosch's international semiconductor manufacturing network while managing the conversion of the plant into a production facility for silicon carbide chips. Thorsten builds on his broad experience in various leadership positions for Bosch in Germany, Hungary, and the U.S., with a strong focus on post-merger integration and more than ten years of expertise in sensor technology. Thorsten is a physicist and holds a PhD in economics.

Dr. Dorothee Schneider is Head of the Economic and Trade Section, since January 2023, at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, DC. Schneider has been posted by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Actions, where she started her career in 2011. Within the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Actions Schneider worked as the Private Secretary of former German Federal Minister Sigmar Gabriel, Deputy head of the Office for Strategic Projects Abroad and Head of Division for Sub-Saharan Africa, which emphasizes her expertise in international affairs. Schneider holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Humboldt-University in Berlin and is specialized in Labour, Macro and Organizational Theory.

Jonathan Tubb is a cyber security professional with extensive expertise and experience developing solutions to power generations biggest security challenges. He specializes in identifying, mitigating, and remediating threats in critical infrastructure environments. Jonathan holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Ohio State University and maintains a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Computer Engineering. He brings over 15 years of hands-on experience to his current role, as Industrial Cyber Security Officer, Gas Services North America at Siemens Energy, Inc. He currently teaches an Operational Technology Cyber Security masters course at Duke University’s Pratt school of Engineering. Outside the professional setting he is an avid brewer.
