Reading Universe is a new service of WETA/Reading Rockets, the Barksdale Reading Institute (BRI), and First Book. We are deeply grounded in the remarkable story of BRI, founded in 2000 by Jim Barksdale to advance literacy in his home state of Mississippi. Historically ranked at or near the bottom in terms of reading achievement, Mississippi’s rankings have improved dramatically over the last decade; and the state has made more progress in its reading scores than any other.
