Whether you call them heart words, trick words, red words, or sight words, irregularly spelled words require you to teach your students explicitly and directly because they contain parts that do not follow standard sound-letter correspondence rules. Reading coach Carla Stanford of Reading Universe demonstrates how she would teach the irregularly spelled word “said” and shows how to provide students with engaging practice.
