Sobieska International Music Festival
The festival is dedicated to the two women of the Polish royal family: Maria Casimira Sobieska, wife of John III, victor of the Battle of Vienna against the Turks (1683), and Maria Clementina Sobieska, his niece and wife of James III Stuart.
During the years of their presence in Rome, which cover almost the entire period from 1699 to 1735, both queens inserted themselves well into the local aristocratic society and-with an important role as patrons in the fields of music and theater. Suffice it to mention that composers such as Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti or Silvius Leopold Weiss wrote for Maria Casimira; Nicola Porpora, Leonardo Vinci , Domenico Sarro and Francesco Gasparini dedicated their works to Maria Clementina.
The festival aims to remember and bring to light the music born in this context and which testifies to the extent to which foreign guests, settling in Rome for long periods with their courts, contributed to building the richness of the city's cultural heritage.
