Prayagraj: माघ मेले में बवाल,बिना स्नान किए लौटे शंकराचार्य, शिष्यों से मारपीट

The Magh Mela is a significant annual religious congregation in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. While not as grand as the Kumbh Mela, it holds immense religious importance, with साधु-संत (saints), Shankaracharyas, and various monastic orders participating in ritualistic bathing.

The Incident: The incident unfolded when Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, along with hundreds of his disciples, was attempting to proceed towards the Sangam for a holy dip.

• Confrontation: A scuffle broke out between the Shankaracharya's procession and police personnel (2:06-2:16).

• Alleged Police Action: The video shows images of police allegedly beating and detaining the Shankaracharya's disciples (2:19-2:25). It's also reported that a sadhu was beaten inside a police outpost (2:27-2:30).

Shankaracharya's Perspective: Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, known for his outspoken criticism of the Modi and Yogi governments (1:45-2:05), vehemently condemned the police action. He stated that senior officials were assaulting his saints:

• "बड़े-बड़े अधिकारी थप्पड़ से मार रहे हैं और उनकी छाती में मार करके उनको गिरा दे रहे हैं। यह दृश्य जब हमने अपनी आंखों से देखा तो अब हमने निर्णय लिया कि हम वापस जाएंगे नहीं स्नान करेंगे।" (0:12-0:22) (Big officers are slapping and hitting them on their chests, making them fall. When I saw this with my own eyes, I decided I would not go back without bathing.)

• He initially decided to return but changed his mind after seeing his disciples being beaten: "हमने स्वयं अपनी आंखों से देखा। बड़े-बड़े अधिकारी संतों को मार रहे हैं… उसके बाद फिर एक दल आया पुलिस वालों का और वह संतों को मारने लगे। यह क्या है?" (5:21-5:43) (We saw with our own eyes. Senior officers were beating saints, and then they came to us again. You saw, when we were returning, we started walking back. Then another group of policemen came and started beating the saints. What is this?)

• He accused the government of orchestrating the incident as an act of revenge, linking it to his past criticism of the administration during the 2013 Kumbh Mela stampede (3:50-4:21, 6:05-6:30): "यह आदित्यनाथ योगी के इशारे पर हो रहा होगा क्योंकि वही हमसे खार खाए हैं। हमने कुंभ में जब भगदड़ मची थी उसके बाद के लिए उनको जिम्मेदार ठहराया था तो अब वो बदला निकालने के लिए अधिकारियों को कह रहे होंगे या उनको खुश करने के लिए अधिकारी हमारा अपमान करना चाहते होंगे।" (6:16-6:30) (This must be happening at the behest of Adityanath Yogi, because he holds a grudge against us. When the stampede happened at Kumbh, we held him responsible. So now, he might be telling officials to take revenge, or officials might want to insult us to please him.)

The police administration provided a counter-narrative, denying any use of force and emphasizing crowd control and safety concerns.

• Route Diversion: An official stated that the bridge the Shankaracharya intended to use was closed due to safety measures and crowd management for Mauni Amavasya, a day of immense pilgrim turnout (7:23-7:39).

• No VIP Snan: They clarified that on Mauni Amavasya, no VIP 'snan' (special bath) was allowed; everyone, including judges and officials, was expected to bathe like common devotees (8:07-8:18, 8:53-9:00).

• Denial of Violence: The police denied any physical altercation, stating that officers were instructed not to push anyone and did not carry sticks (7:46-7:56, 6:53-6:56).

• Legal Action: They indicated that legal action would be taken based on CCTV footage for breaking barriers and obstructing duty (9:54-10:06).
