Step 2 of the 2-method way to successfully transplant an established Holly bush. Hollies don't like being moved so the transplant is best done in 2 phases: Phase 1 in the Fall: Here you slice down around the drip line with a nice sharp spade cutting through the roots but without moving the plant. For the rest of the Fall, the bush will form new thinner roots which will enable the transplanted shrub to settle in quickly in its new location. Step 2 is done in Spring and you slip the spade into the same circle around the shrub and start to lift. The shrub is quite established so the root ball is heavy, but my husband and son were there to do the lifting. When transplanting anything and even more so when it is an older plant/shrub/tree, watering is key to success - all through that first growing season. If like me you live in a climate with hot dry summers you need to take extra precautions. From then on normal watering is applicable.
