Here is one of the earliest Edison Phonographs in my collection. This is an Edison Spring Motor Phonograph from circa 1896. The serial number on this is very early (5263). When I purchased this machine it was in as found condition (just the way I like them!) but it had an unfortunate problem. Many years ago the ancient original cast iron bed plate was cracked likely due to a blow from a heavy object falling onto it. All else was fine on it. Fortunately, I was able to find another original Edison Spring Motor bed plate from the same early time period. This is one the earliest known Edison Spring Motor Phonographs. This one actually started its life as an Edison Class M DC electric (battery jar) powered phonograph! When Frank Capps (an Edison engineer) designed a new and innovative 3 spring motor in 1895, owners of Edison Class M electric phonographs had the option of converting their phonograph to the new (and less cumbersome to operate) Spring Motor Phonograph with the new Frank Capps spring motor. I decided to play 3 of my favorite 2 minute cylinders on this machine. As always, I sincerely appreciate your visit and hope that you enjoy the presentation!
