If your assignment is kindergarten or first grade, get to school extra early.
With this age level, you have to know what you should be doing minute by minute, you will have very little time to find crayons or figure out the calendar while students are there.
This age group thrives on repetition. Try and match what the children do everyday. You should always be three steps ahead, knowing after calendar comes lunch count, comes word of the day, comes lesson in plural nouns, comes journal etc.
If you give yourself lots of time to walk through your lesson plan in the morning this will be much easier. At the end of the day, you get rewarded with hugs and high fives. Not a bad deal.
